In neonatal cord blood, scientists have discovered many types of stem cells, but the key and most important ones are hematopoietic stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells. Hematopoietic stem cells are cells that capable of self – renewal and differentiating into different types of blood cells. Cord blood stem cells do not cause GVHD (Graft Versus Host Disease) like bone marrow stem cells. They are less restrictive in HLA matching compared to mature bone marrow stem cells, and they are also less likely to be infected with Herpes virus.
